Hardeep Singh Nijjar—a Khalistani supporter killed in June—has become the reason for tension between India and Canada.
After conducting a top level investigation, the Indian authorities claimed that Hardeep Singh Nijjar was involved with a banned militant outfit, declaring him a terrorist. The Indian authorities lodged several criminal cases against him due to his alleged involvement with the farmers’ protest that year against the controversial agricultural laws.
In 2022, the Indian authorities announced a reward of $16,000 for information that could lead to his arrest. The authorities declared the reward because he was allegedly involved in the killing of a Hindu priest in India.
In 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) was a terrorist organization. According to the Indian Government, Najjar was the leader of KTF and was actively involved in the networking and operationalization of the terror group.
The MHA said the following in regards to KTF:
“It is a militant outfit and it aims to revive terrorism in Punjab and challenges the territorial integrity, unity, national security and sovereignty of India and promotes various acts of terrorism, including targeted killings in Punjab.”
In 2013, Nijjar had allegedly visited Pakistan to meet Jagtar Singh Tara—the same person who was involved in the assassination of Beant Sing, the former Chief Minister of Punjab. While he escaped from the prison in 2004, he was re-arrested in 2015 from Thailand.
An article published on Indian Express mentions the following:
“His name was also on the wanted list that former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh handed over to Prime Minister Trudeau during the latter’s visit to India in 2018.”
What started as a Sikh independence movement, turned into armed insurgency in the 1970s, which gripped the entire nation. In 1984, Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India ordered a raid in the Golden Temple where Jarnail Singh Bhindarwale and other Sikh separatists were hiding. After the bloody seizure, the separatists were killed in the holy shrine.
Shortly after, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards. In response, there were several crackdowns and the movement was suppressed.
An article published on The Hindu mentions the following:
“Nearly a week after Nijjar’s slaying, about 200 protesters from Canada’s Sikh community gathered in front of the Indian Consulate in Vancouver to demonstrate. Many of the protesters were convinced that Nijjar’s killing was linked to his calls for an independent Sikh state.”
