Surat: Call it a no-alcohol bachelor’s party gone wrong!.
A 27-year-old groom ended up spending the night at a police station instead of preparing for his wedding after being caught gambling with 12 relatives just hours before the big day.
The wedding was scheduled on Saturday and the family claimed that gambling is tradition as part of the celebrations. The groom and his 12 relatives started playing teen patti (three-card poker) in the marriage hall.
Meanwhile, around 3am, the Rander police on patrolling duty received a tip-off that some people were gambling in Tumbi Hall near Jilani Bridge. The police raided the hall and found the groom and his kin deep into a game of high-stakes cards.
Police seized Rs 76,720 in cash, five sets of playing cards, and 12 mobile phones worth Rs 1.32 lakhs from the hall. All were booked under sections 4 and 5 of the Gambling Act and released on bail by Friday evening.
The bail procedure for the groom and his brother was completed before others as they needed to make preparations for his big day on Saturday.
