Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has demanded a standard operating procedure (SOP) for new GST registration to ensure ease of doing business. GCCI recently sent a representation regarding various issues related to GST to the state and central GST departments.
“We understand that checks and balances in availing registration under the GST Acts are important tools to weed out fake entities. However, it is equally necessary that these very checks and balances should not lead to unnecessary hassles for genuine taxpayers,” said Deep Thakkar, a chartered accountant and co-chairman of the GCCI indirect tax committee.
The GCCI representation mentioned that many officers ask for documents that are difficult for businesses to produce, necessitating a list of necessary documents for GST registration. It also mentioned that biometric verification should be possible from any state to ensure a taxpayer does not need to travel to Gujarat from their home states for the biometric verification.
“Currently, the biometric authentication process is rolled out for thirteen states. If any applicant from another state wants to register for GST in Gujarat, they would be assigned a biometric session. The person concerned will have to travel to Gujarat for the session,” said Thakkar.
“As the biometric authentication system is being rolled out in a phased manner across India, it is suggested that there should be real-time coordination between all states, and data sharing must be enabled. In line with this, such a person should be permitted to undertake biometric authentication at the GST seva kendra of their state rather than travelling to Gujarat,” GCCI demanded.
