Gautam Gambhir dedicates India’s T20 World Cup win to these two legends

India’s T20 World Cup victory on Sunday carried a personal note for head coach Gautam Gambhir. Speaking after the final, Gambhir said the title was not just about the current squad but also about the groundwork laid by two former Indian greats.

The result came after a period when Gambhir faced criticism following Test series defeats against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

T20 World Cup victory dedicated to Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman

India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, sealing their third title in the tournament’s history. The win also made India the first team to defend the trophy and the first to achieve that feat on home soil.

During the post-match press conference, Gambhir said he wanted to dedicate the title to Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

“I would dedicate this trophy to Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman,” Gambhir said. He credited Dravid for helping place the national side in a strong position and Laxman for strengthening the talent pipeline through the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, NDTV reported.

The coach also addressed criticism he received during a difficult phase earlier in his tenure. According to Gambhir, accountability lies inside the team environment rather than outside commentary.

“My accountability is not for people on social media. My accountability is to those 30 people in that change room,” he said.

Gambhir also acknowledged the backing he received from chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Jay Shah.

He recalled that Shah reached out during what he described as a low phase following Test losses against New Zealand and South Africa. Gambhir said the support helped him stay focused during that period, as reported by NDTV.

“A coach is as good as his team,” he added, crediting players for the success.

Gambhir also praised captain Suryakumar Yadav for working closely with him throughout the tournament. He called him a “leader who is a father figure,” adding that it made his job easier.

India’s dominant performance in the T20 World Cup final

India’s victory was built on a strong batting display. The team posted 255 for 5, driven by 89 from Sanju Samson and half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan.

With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets while Axar Patel added three, restricting New Zealand to 159.

India’s latest T20 World Cup victory adds another milestone to the team’s white-ball success.

For Gautam Gambhir, the result also serves as validation after a challenging phase.
