Five organs of a 43 year old brain-dead man in Bhubaneswar were donated to save four patients in three different states.  This operation is said to be the first of its kind in the state of Odisha.-Donates latest news

In this multi-city operation five vital organs from a 43 year old brain-dead man, named Prasannajit Mohanty from Bhubaneswar, were transplanted on four different patients from the different cities of Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, and Delhi.

What really happened to Prasannajit?-Donates latest news

According to the reports, on June 22, Prasannajit, a resident of Rental Colony area of Bhubaneswar, endured a severe head trauma in an accident. His family admitted him to SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM), a local private hospital, at once. After running several tests there and despite a crucial surgery he was declared brain-dead the next day. Still, the doctors conducted apnea tests on him twice, confirming the unfortunate news of Prasannajit’s brain death.

Showing remarkable kindness and empathy, Prasannajit’s family expressed their desire to donate all his transplantable organs. His wife and near ones took this decision to honour his memory and earlier wish, for a purpose to help those in need.-Donates latest news

How the whole procedure materialized

With the permission granted by Prasannajit family, the hospital started the procedure of administrative permits for retrieval of organs and cadaveric transplantation. The hospital informed the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) and later information passed on to the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) regarding the development.

Five of Prasannajit’s vital organs were deemed transplantable. Clinical teams from Kolkata and Delhi arrived at SUMUM on June 24, and a team of 20 doctors harvested two kidneys, two lungs, and the liver from the donor’s body, in an almost four-hour-long operation. A team of neurosurgeons and ICU specialists played a vital part by checking that the donor remains stable throughout the process keeping him appropriate for organ donation.

While the kidneys were allocated to two patients within the state, with one donee at SUMUM and another at a hospital in Cuttack, the lungs saved the life of a 16-year-old patient in Kolkata. The liver was transported to Delhi for a patient struggling for survival.

The local Police created a green corridor from the hospital to the airport for smooth transportation of the organs to their respective destination. All four patients, who received the organs, are recovering.

Significance of this act and need for organ donation in India

Amidst the loss of Mohanty’s valuable life, the exceptional example set by his family, is deeply inspirational and commendable.

Though the amount of organ donation is increasing in India, it still has one of the lowest organ donation percentages in the world. The organ donation rate in India is about 0.52/million, compared to some western countries, where it is as high as 36/million. Awareness can boost organ donation and one brain-dead donor can save almost eight patients.

In conditions like this, Mohanty’s organ donation sends a powerful message to all the Indians.
