गिरिडीह नगर निगम क्षेत्र में स्थित कई सरकारी कुएं गायब हो गयी हैं। इन कुओं में कूड़ा-कचरा डाल कर उनका अस्तित्व ही समाप्त कर दिया गया है। ऐसे में कल तक जो कुएं लोगों की प्यास बुझाते थे, आज कूड़ेदान में तब्दील हो गये हैं। इस पर न तो सरकारी महकमा का कोई ध्यान है और न ही यहां के जनप्रतिनिधियों का।
दो दशक पूर्व तक शहरी क्षेत्र में 30-40 सरकारी कुएं थीं। इन कुओं के पानी का उपयोग संबंधित इलाकों की बड़ी आबादी करती थी।
शहरी क्षेत्र की आबादी बढ़ने एवं फ्लैट व आवास बनने से लोग अपने घरों में डीप बोरिंग कराने लगे। पानी की खपत बढ़ने से जलस्तर घटने लगा और आसपास स्थित कुएं धीरे-धीरे सूखने लगे।
पूरी तरह सूख चुके कुएं में लोग लोग कूड़ा-कचरा फेंकने लगे। कुछ ही वर्षों में दर्जनाधिक कुएं कूड़े से भर दिये गये।
जानकार बताते हैं कि शहरी क्षेत्र के गांधी चौक, मकतपुर, बड़ा चौक, केंद्रीय पुस्तकालय के पास, इंदिरा कॉलोनी, राजपूत मुहल्ला, बोड़ो समेत पचंबा में कई कुओं का अस्तित्व समाप्त हो गया है।
नगर निगम क्षेत्र में सरकारी तालाबों की संख्या 24 है।

Experts say that many wells in the urban area including Gandhi Chowk, Makatpur, Bada Chowk, near the Central Library, Indira Colony, Rajput Mohalla, Bodo, and Pachamba have ceased to exist.
The number of government bonds in the municipal corporation area is 24.
