NEW DELHI: Delhi’s air quality remained ‘very poor’ on Sunday, with reduced visibility due to fog, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was 388 at 7 am. Some areas experienced ‘severe’ air quality, including Alipur (411), Anand Vihar (427), and RK Puram (408). Other locations reported “very poor” readings: ITO (384), Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (372), DTU (354), IGI Airport (T3) (372), and DU North Campus (381).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius in Delhi. The cold prompted people to seek shelter in night shelters.
Motorcyclists reported difficulties due to the air quality. “I ride on Sundays and once a day I ride my bike. So I used to ride more from Noida and was feeling good there. As soon as I entered Delhi, my eyes started burning and fog started to appear. I have to take the helmet mirror off repeatedly and there is a lot of problem here in Delhi,” one rider said.
Another rider added, “I ride every Sunday. When I entered Delhi from Noida, I felt that the pollution was increasing here. I am having a lot of trouble breathing and riding a bike because I have to take off my helmet.”
GRAP stage IV measures, implemented on December 16th, remain in effect across the National Capital Region (NCR) to address the deteriorating air quality.
