NEW DELHI: Two people died and 12 were rescued after a four-storey building collapsed in North Delhi‘s Burari on Monday.
According to the police, two people were rescued on Tuesday but were declared brought dead. Meanwhile, 12 others were rescued on Monday.
According to police, the building, which was recently constructed and spread across 200 square yards, came crashing down around 6.30 pm. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received the emergency call at 6.56 pm, and nine fire tenders were deployed at the site immediately. Sixty firefighters were conducting the rescue operations.
Inquiry revealed that false ceiling work was underway, and labourers were residing on the premises. The incident sparked chaos in the area, with residents thinking that it might have been an earthquake or a gas cylinder blast.
According to a fire official, all the floors of the building fell like a pack of cards.
Last year, between January and August, 344 house collapse incidents took place, which resulted in 22 fatalities and 172 injuries, revealed data available with Delhi Fire Services. During the corresponding period in 2023, DFS personnel attended to 297 fire incidents. These incidents led to 18 fatalities and 110 injuries.
An analysis of the data reveals that the maximum cases, 90, occurred in August. These incidents resulted in the loss of eight lives and injuries to 21 individuals. In comparison, the highest number of house collapse incidents recorded in the previous year was in July—87.
These cases led to six fatalities and 28 injuries.
