A Delhi court recently issued summons to news network India Today, its Chairman Aroon Purie, Vice Chairman Kallie Purie and other office bearers in a criminal defamation case filed by Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai.

Judicial Magistrate Tarunpreet Kaur of Patiala House Courts passed the order on July 26 after coming to a prima facie finding that by linking Rai to conman Sanjay Sherpuria, India Today had defamed him.

“Let summons be issued to accused 1. Aroon Purie (Chairman, India Today Group), 2. Kallie Purie (Vice Chairman, India Today Group), 3. Supriya Prasad (Managing Editor, Tak Channels), 4. Milind Khandekar (Managing Editor) and 5. India Today on filing of PF within 15 days from today, for offence under section 500 IPC, for the NDOH (next date of hearing),” the Court said.

Rai has sued India Today and its office bearers for defamation for two stories published on the website of Aaj Tak new channel alleging that Rai was called for questioning by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in relation to the Sanjay Sherpuria case.

It is Rai’s case that the articles are defamatory and wrongly allege that he is the nephew of conman Sanjay Rai Sherpuria.

Notably, Rai has also sued ABP News for criminal defamation and the Court has summoned the channel and its office bearers in that case.

Sherpuria is a businessman from Lucknow who was arrested on allegations that he and his aides collected money from several people by claiming close association with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and senior bureaucrats.
