Ahmedabad: Waterborne diseases continue to rise in the city, with 117 cases of diarrhoea and vomiting, 170 cases of jaundice, 131 cases of typhoid, and two cases of cholera being reported in the first 15 days of Dec. This data was revealed as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) released the epidemic data for the city on Monday.
The period also saw 45 simple malaria cases, 10 severe malaria cases, 39 dengue cases, and six chikungunya cases.
Despite winter setting in and the minimum temperature reaching 13 degrees celsius, the rise in waterborne diseases and related illnesses continued unabated in the city.
According to AMC data, Nov recorded 314 diarrhoea and vomiting cases, 327 jaundice cases, 324 cases of typhoid, and no cholera cases. However, Dec’s first fortnight reported two cholera cases. The AMC, during this period, analysed 2,700 water samples for bacteria and found that 13 samples were unsuitable. Of 26,168 water samples tested for chlorine, 85 showed insufficient levels.
The corporation examined 34,668 blood samples for viral fever and conducted serum analysis on 1,725 samples for suspected dengue during the past fortnight.
The year 2024 reported higher waterborne diseases compared to 2023. The previous year registered 6,847 diarrhoea and vomiting cases, 1,739 jaundice cases, 4,308 cases of typhoid, and 95 cholera cases. However, from Jan 1 to Dec 15 this year, the numbers increased to 9,841 diarrhoea and vomiting cases, 3,165 jaundice cases, 5,191 typhoid cases, and 201 cholera cases.
