Surat: The centenary celebration of noted cartoonist Mario de Miranda was held at his birthplace, Nani Daman, on Friday. Miranda was born on May 2, 1926, and went on to become an award-winning cartoonist.
The celebration took place with a small gathering and cake cutting at the Chapel of The Holy Cross, which was constructed by Miranda’s grandfather. This event launched a year-long celebration of his life and works.
Staff from the Portuguese Consulate, Goa, attended the function.
Orlando Miranda, a retired govt officer, gave a short speech about the history of the chapel and a little about Miranda.
This was followed by the garlanding of Miranda’s photo, after which the cake was cut by the oldest person present.
“Though Mario Miranda was my mother’s neighbour in Nani Daman and my father’s friend as a young man, I got the opportunity to meet him only in the ’90s when he visited Daman on the invitation of then collector, M S Khan. I was charmed!” said Noel Gama, a Daman resident.
