Why it Can be Difficult for India to Win the ODI World Cup – Part One

India has not learned anything from their previous mistakes, and that could be the reason for their downfall.

Before I get into this, let me quite honestly tell you that I am a fan, and the following are some observations I made in the last two decades.

Well, it all began after the mostly unholy episodes in Indian cricket—the match-fixing kind that shook the entire nation. Just like many fans in 2000, I was adamant about not following cricket. But, my ideas changed. Saurav Ganguly, aka Dada, took charge, and in walked John Wright, and his decisions always proved right. The combination of Dada and Wright began shaping the Indian team, it was as though India got a new lease of life. From Md. Kaif to Yuvraj Singh to M S Dhoni, India was seeing the birth of new stars.

Dada took India to a new level; however, after the appointment of Greg Chappel, Indian cricket began witnessing another fall. There was discontent among the team members, which was very evident in their performance. Amid the crisis, in 2007, the team had to play in the 2007 World Cup, and the result—India was down and out. They had to exit in the first round.

Next thing you know, India was walking into the T20 World Cup with a new captain, MS Dhoni. Not only did they win the T20 World Cup, but India was seeing a turning point in its cricket history.

But why the back story you may ask? The back story is vital because India, it seems, has not learned anything from their past mistakes. India, tigers at home, but God knows which animal they turn into when they play outside! Before I reveal why it will be difficult for India to win the ODI World Cup despite it being held at home, let me give you another back story. Remember 1983? No one expected India to win, but the team under the leadership of the dynamic Kapil Dev was hungry. The hunger to win was so much that only having that trophy could have satisfied them. And that is exactly what happened—India won its first World Cup!

2007, Greg Chappell and the team were walking in opposite directions. The unity in the team was missing. And to top everything else, the hunger to win was completely missing. And the result, we all know!

Cut to 2023, did you feel anything? And to be completely honest, I get the 2007 ODI vibes. No unity in the team, no hunger and to top all that, the team is not yet fixed! With only weeks remaining for the ODI World Cup to begin, India, sadly looks very much like it was back in 2007.

In the next episode, we will explore more on the topic.
