Bengaluru: Movement of goods vehicles has been prohibited within the Jnanabharathi campus of Bangalore University. Goods vehicles like tipper lorries, tempos, and goods autos were using the campus as a shortcut to avoid traffic congestion on Mysuru Road to reach Ullal. This was disrupting academic activities and posed a risk for students. The university administration appealed to police for appropriate measures in this regard.
Police commissioner B Dayananda issued an order prohibiting entry of goods vehicles into the university, said the spokesperson of the university. Goods vehicles from Ullal, Mariyappanapalya, Nagarabhavi Circle, and Jnanabharathi are now mandated to use alternative routes instead of entering the university campus.
Banning vehicles inside the campus has been a long-standing demand of the students of the university. A postgraduate Maths student, Shilpashree, died after she fell off a BMTC bus inside the campus in 2022.
“We had a meeting with the police department two months ago. The resolution was that we will restrict the goods vehicles. The traffic inside the campus has been growing and terrible these days. It was posing a threat to the safety of students as well as increasing the pollution,” said vice-chancellor Jayakar Shetty.
