Bird’s Eye View of Lok Sabha Election 2024: What Seat-Sharing Formula Will the MVA Finalize in Maharashtra
Discussions between the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies – the Shiv Sena (UBT, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and, the Congress to reach a common ground on seat sharing have advanced and so has the campaign trail, in Maharashtra.
While the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders have resolved to combat the 2024 elections together, but differences among them over a seat-sharing formula is very much evident.
The coalition partners have been persistently appearing as a united front in spite of their mutual rift behind closed doors. Despite giving strikingly different statements all the 3 parties have been vocal about combating the 2024 elections together.
There are total 48 Lok Sabha seats to be shared by the 3 allies of the MVA, the second highest in the country, and the parties are driving a hard bargain for these seats only.
Before going further, let us take a look back at, how each of them fared in the last Lok Sabha polls.
The NCP won 4 out of 18 Lok Sabha seats it contended for.
The Congress won only 1 out of 25 seats it contended for
The Shiv Sena (UBT) fared better than both NCP and the Congress and won 18 out of 23 seats it contested. But these numbers changed for Uddhav Thackrey after Eknath Shinde broke the party up last year. Shiv Sena (UBT) has now ended up with only 6 of the 18 seats it won.
Reasons for the rift within MVA
- The Congress’ recent victory in Karnataka Assembly Election gave the party a big ego boost. It has won 135 out of 224 assembly seats single handedly. Now the Congress is adamant about contesting maximum number of Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra reasoning that as a “national party” it can knock down BJP. The Congress has even finished reviewing 41 of the 48 seats.
- The Shiv Sena , on the other hand, is not interested in letting go of any 18 seats it had won in the 2019 Lok Sabha. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said to the media, “We have won those seats, so those remain with us”…”It is a different matter if people have switched sides later.” In some of these seats Congress had a stronghold in the past.
- An issue of ‘big brother’ surfaced when NCP leader Ajit Pawar claimed, “The Congress had more seats in every previous election. We had to play the role of the younger brother while allotting seats.” He tried to hint that in spite of having more number of seats allotted Congress has always fared worse than them in the elections.
MVA to create panel of senior leaders to finalize seat-sharing formula
A senior NCP leader and MLA, Jayant Patil, denied the news of any fights among the MVA allies and said NCP is running internal review. MVA will establish council of three senior leaders each from the three parties to formulate the allocation of seats.
A senior Congress leader verified, “These nine members will discuss the possible seat sharing formula where point of views of each party will be discussed. The arrangement is to ensure that only senior leaders go through the entire process and find solutions to problems amicably”.
