The Indian government has launched the Bharatmala Pariyojna Project, an extensive road and highway project that is being considered as one of the largest and most impactful in India’s history. This initiative is set to transform transportation across the country while having a potential boost to the economy.
The Bharatmala Pariyojna Project is a massive undertaking by the government of India, aimed at improving transportation throughout the country. The project includes the construction of various structures like bridges, tunnels, flyovers, elevated corridors, interchanges, ring roads, bypasses, and overpasses. The project was initially scheduled for completion in 2022, but due to the pandemic, it started later than expected and got delayed. However, despite the delay, the project’s implementation is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the nation’s infrastructure and creating new opportunities for its citizens.
The Bharatmala Pariyojna Project is an extensive highway project launched by the government of India. It is comprised of several components, including an Economic corridor of 9000 km, a National corridor of 5000 km, International Border connectivity roads of 2000 km, Coastal and port connectivity of 2000 km, feeder roads, and Inter corridors of 6000 km. The project also includes the development of greenfield expressways, which is a major focus. Additionally, the remaining 10000 km will be dedicated to NHDP for the construction and maintenance of new highways. The International Border connectivity will promote trade with neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.
According to the government of India, the Bharatmala Pariyojna Project is set to be one of the biggest highway projects and therefore would need necessary fund allocation. The project’s total cost from 2017 to 2022 is estimated at Rs. 692,324 crores, which will be utilized to construct a total of 50,000 km of roads and highways. The government plans to raise Rs. 2 lakh crores as debt through the central road fund and market borrowings. Additionally, public-private partnership models will be included to fund the project and contribute to the nation’s development. The project’s phase 1 is expected to be completed by 2026, with phase 2 scheduled to follow soon after.
It will be intriguing to observe the impact of the NH network on the advancement of road and surface connectivity, particularly with the construction of at least 4-lane highways. Shri Gadkari is known for his unconventional methods, so it will be fascinating to witness his upcoming ventures. These initiatives will not only contribute to the economic growth of the nation but also enhance its road infrastructure.
