BELAGAVI: The landowners who provided their land to the Belagavi Urban Development Authority (Buda) for developing Residential Project Scheme No. 61 at Kanabaragi have decided to launch an indefinite strike in front of the Buda office from Friday.
They are demanding that the foundation stone for the project be laid during the upcoming winter session. The landowners submitted a memorandum to urban development minister Byrathi Suresh through the deputy commissioner (DC).
This issue is expected to be raised during the winter session. For several years, farmers have been appealing to the ministers concerned during winter sessions in Belagavi, in vain.
This time, they have resolved to draw the govt’s attention through a prolonged strike. Buda acquired the farmers’ land in 2007, but work on the project has not commenced due to legal and technical hurdles.
Over the past 18 years, Buda has not developed a single residential layout, leading to skyrocketing real estate prices in and around the city. Since the acquisition, the landowners have received no income from their land. Buda had agreed to share the developed land with the farmers on a 50:50 basis. Frustrated by a 17-year wait, the farmers have decided to go on strike.
