BCCI May Sack Rohit Sharma after West Indies Tour: A Lot is at Stake for the Indian Hero

Rohit Sharma, one of the finest cricketers India has ever produced, is now facing the brunt of Indian fans and gurus because of the team’s poor performance in the 2023 WTC finals. The lackluster performance by the players and equally uninspiring captaincy by Rohit may trigger BCCI to relieve him from Test captaincy.

Rohit, popularly known as the “Hit Man” due to his playing style, won the hearts of fans and cricketing experts. The only cricketer to ever score double century thrice now finds himself in a grave situation.

An article published on crictoday mentions the following:

“A report by the Press Trust of India (PTI) suggests that Rohit’s future as captain beyond the West Indies series is in doubt. If the 36-year-old fails to perform well in the upcoming series starting on July 12, the selectors might consider a change in leadership.

According to sources, this could be Rohit’s final outing as the Test captain. A lot is at stake for the 35-year-batter: if he fails to impress the selectors with his performances, he may have to give way to a new Test captain ahead of the South Africa series.

While there is a lot of speculation regarding replacing Rohit, BCCI has cleared the air about him retaining the captaincy. According to a senior BCCI official, there are no grounds to relieve Rohit from captaincy. However, the BCCI will closely evaluate his batting performance after the West Indies series.

“These are baseless stuff that Rohit will be removed from captaincy. Yes, whether he will last the whole two-year WTC cycle is a big question as he would be nearly 38 when the third edition ends in 2025,” a BCCI official familiar with the matter told PTI.

The crictoday article mentions:

“Interestingly, Rohit initially hesitated to take on the role of Test captain when Virat Kohli resigned in January 2022 due to fitness issues. It was only after convincing from former president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah that Rohit accepted the responsibility, following KL Rahul’s unsuccessful stint as captain in South Africa.”
