Badlapur case: Cop benched over FIR delay, state tells HC

Mumbai: The state govt on Tuesday informed Bombay HC that a police officer who had initially refused to lodge an FIR in Aug in the Badlapur sexual assault case was suspended and two of her increments were stopped.
State public prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar informed a bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj K Chavan that a departmental inquiry was conducted against the officer. He said two police constables were let off with a strict warning.
After being told that the two kids who were sexually assaulted had been shifted to another school, HC noted that issuance of the school leaving certificate and the school fees’ refund were yet to be initiated. It asked Venegaonkar to look into this aspect; he said he would.
HC also heard the lawyer for the family of the accused, Akshay Shinde, who was fatally shot by a police officer on Sept 23 near the Mumbra bypass. The lawyer said he had not been able to contact Shinde’s parents and did not know their whereabouts. Venegaonkar said police had stated that their signed statements had been recorded. HC asked him to present the parents via video-conference at the next date and adjourned the matter to Thursday.
HC was also told that CCTV footage will be submitted before the trial court and a letter will be sent to the forensic science lab for a report. —Swati Deshpande
