Auroville Organized its Maiden Literary Festival Much to the Art Lovers’ Delight

Home to over 60 nationalities, Auroville unveiled its first literary festival in August as a culminating event to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo and a tribute to his legacy.

Are you a book lover or a writer searching for inspiration? And that too while experiencing diverse cultures and seeking holistic fulfillment? If so, you should have been at Auroville’s inaugural literary festival, held from August 25-27 in Puducherry. However, if you missed it or were unaware of the event, then fret not.  Watch this video till the end to get an insight into the celebration of art and literature at the festival.

The Auroville Foundation which comes under the Ministry of Education curated this world-class literary festival in collaboration with the non-profit organizations of Valley of Words and the Chennai International Centre. The first Auroville Literary Festival (ALF) started on Friday, August 25, across different areas of Auroville’s International Zone campus, with the aim of arranging an annual event that included some of the great writers and artists in the universal township of Auroville that was inspired by the Mother. The ALF coincided with the 150th birthday celebrations of Sri Aurobindo, whose universal vision was materialized by The Mother, and the 100th birth anniversary of French Architect Roger Anger, who under her guidance, gave shape to this township. The purpose of the festival was to promote greater awareness and unity among humans.

The two–and–a–half–day festival hosted 17 Indian and 7 international authors, thinkers, translators, and artists who spread the magic of their words engaging a lovely audience. These great minds present there included awardees of coveted prizes like the UNESCO Cities of Literature Award, Sahitya Academy Award, and Tagore Prize among others.

Some of the noted authors and poets who graced the event were Trinidad-born Peggy Mohan, German-French author Anne Weber, French author Violaine Huisman, Karen Jennings, Shreya Sen, poets Ranjit Hoskote, Sudeep Sen, etc. Anu Majumder, one of the coordinators of the festival specially mentioned the launch of an interesting book, “This is the translation of Sharat Chandra Chatterjee’s ‘The Deliverance’ from Bengali to English, which was revised by Sri Aurobindo himself and published with a preface by Rabindranath Tagore”

As the evenings approached world arts and music mingled together with the theatrical show by the Surya Performance Lab Auroville.

The open-access festival was one-of-its-kind with the surroundings filled with food stalls, craft stores, and book stalls where literary luminaries gathered under one umbrella.
