New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) announced the completion of resurfacing of the caved-in portion of Ashoka Road on Thursday. The council stated that traffic was likely to resume at the site by Friday.
The crucial section of Ashoka Road, a three-foot-wide segment extending from C-Hexagon to Windsor Place carriageway, caved in last Friday. However, the portion was temporarily filled before the repair work was carried out. The incident severely disrupted the traffic flow.
The road suffered three cave-ins over the past 18 months. An official said that the frequent cave-ins were a result of numerous utility lines situated underneath this specific section of the road.
“Though the work for strengthening sewer lines in Lutyens’ Delhi is already completed at most of the places, there are multiple utility lines beneath this section on Ashoka Road. The latest cave-in happened due to damage to a treated water line. The agency concerned carried out the repair work, after which we laid the road afresh. The barricaded portion will be open to the public soon,” said the official.
Earlier in Aug, two patches on this road caved in, leading to traffic jams as the sites were barricaded and limited space was available on the road to move. The cave-ins happened due to damage to the underground sewer lines that took over a month to repair. Thereafter, a large section of C-Hexagon near India Gate also caved in near National Gallery of Modern Art last year in July, leading to traffic disruptions for two days. The council claims to have made efforts to rectify the issues.
