Vice President Harris recently took to her Twitter handle to announce the threat of climate crisis and what the Biden-led government us doing to avert it.
“The climate crisis is not a future issue. It is happening now, but we still have time to act.
@POTUS and I have made the largest investment in climate action in history. We will protect our planet and our communities,” tweeted Harris.
A blog published on United Nations Climate Change mentions the following:
“…We are still nowhere near the scale and pace of emission reductions required to put us on track toward a 1.5 degrees Celsius world. To keep this goal alive, national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them in the next eight years,” said Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change.
In 2015, 196 countries signed the Paris Agreement. All the countries agreed on doing their bit to keep global warming below 2 ° C. The countries also agreed on achieving Net Zero by 2050. However, the ambition of achieving carbon neutrality remains a distant dream. Climate change is a problem that governments cannot solve alone. It must be a collective effort by communities, business owners, and regional governments.
What is at stake?
In addition to rising sea level and melting of icecaps in the Polar Regions, Extreme heat waves coupled with increased risk of flooding and dangers to wildlife is a direct result of climate change.
The way forward:
An article published on Global Goals mentions the following:
“Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. Through education, innovation and adherence to our climate commitments, we can make the necessary changes to protect the planet. These changes also provide huge opportunities to modernize our infrastructure which will create new jobs and promote greater prosperity across the globe.”
