Mission Olympics 2036: AMC to build sports complex in every zone

Ahmedabad: With the possibility of the city playing host to the world’s biggest sporting extravaganza, the Olympics in 2023, preparations have now gone into full swing. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is looking to establish new sports infrastructure in each zone of the city. Current plans include constructing large sports complexes in Gota, Bopal, Ranip, Naroda and Nikol for an estimated total expenditure of Rs 200crore to Rs 250 crore. Sites for these five complexes have been chosen and tenders are likely to be floated soon. Cost estimates have been prepared, and designs and planning finalised for each, officials said.
The sports complex in Gota will be built on 16,875 sq m land for an estimated Rs 28.88 crore. This campus will feature a kabaddi ground, tennis courts, a sports complex building, a swimming pool and parking for 200 two-wheelers and 50 four-wheelers. It will also include four badminton courts, a basketball court, a mini handball court, a five-a-side football court, a squash court, a yoga hall, an indoor hockey court, a netball court, gymnastics facilities and a volleyball court.
Similarly, a sports complex is planned on 29,443 sq m in Bopal for which the site has been finalised. This complex will have courts for various indoor and outdoor games, along with a swimming pool, a gym and a restaurant. The complex in the New Ranip area will come up on 7,657 sq m, the one proposed in Nikol will be built on 10,865 sq m while 19,510 sq m have been allocated for the complex in Naroda.
Besides these five major complexes, mini sports arenas will come up in Khadia, Shahibaug and Vatva and will have box cricket, basketball and badminton courts. AMC officials are scouring for space near Aslali for the Vatva mini arena.
Currently, the largest sports complex in the city’s western zone is being built by AMC in Naranpura on 20 acres Vardan Tower for Rs 583 crore. The complex is expected to be ready within a year. A sports complex is also being developed in the Vastral ward of the East Zone with a Rs 59 crore investment. This will complex is coming up over 49,934 sq m and will include a 25mx20m athletics track, a football ground, four tennis courts, badminton courts, basketball courts and five table tennis courts.
