AHMEDABAD: After years of mounting arrears, the AMC‘s property tax department has taken a hard line against residential societies, sealing hundreds of properties and issuing stern warnings to defaulters to pay up — or face water and sewer disconnections.
The department sealed 469 properties in the East Zone and 279 in the South Zone on Tuesday.
Notices were also issued to the chairmen of 147 societies in the South and East Zones, warning of imminent disconnection of water and sewer services if dues remain unpaid.
The department provided a list of defaulters to the chairmen of 120 societies in the East Zone and 27 in the South Zone. The society office-bearers were ordered to notify their members to pay the outstanding property tax immediately or lose their water and sewer connections.
For the first time, stickers about unpaid property taxes were affixed to properties, shaming defaulters and leading to an immediate recovery of Rs 18.86 lakh. The East Zone intensified its efforts by initiating the valuation and auctioning process for 10 properties, along with adding encumbrances in the revenue records of 18 properties.
Over the year, encumbrances worth Rs 3.29 crore have been recorded against 194 properties.
