Rehman resigns from AAP, says Muslim rights ‘ignored’

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party‘s Seelampur MLA, Abdul Rehman, resigned from the primary membership of the party on Tuesday.
Rehman announced his resignation on X with a post: “Today, I am resigning from the primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party. The party ignored the rights of Muslims by getting entangled in politics. Arvind Kejriwal always did his politics by running away from the issues of the people. I will keep fighting for justice and rights.”
Rehman attached his two-page resignation letter addressed to the AAP chief, Kejriwal. He later joined Congress in the presence of DPCC chief Devender Yadav. The Seelampur MLA had defeated BJP’s Kaushal Kumar Mishra in the 2020 Assembly polls.
Sources said that Rehman was denied a ticket from Seelampur, and this was the reason behind Rehman leaving the party. AAP had released its second list of candidates, where it selected Zubair Ahmed instead of Rehman for the Seelampur seat. Rehman announced his departure within a day of the list’s announcement, while criticising the party for its alleged disregard towards minority interests.
AAP won 62 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly in the Feb 2020 assembly elections, while the BJP won the remaining eight. Congress could not win a single seat.
