Aamir Khan reflects on Thugs of Hindostan failure: 'It was not a very good film'

Aamir Khan has opened up about Thugs of Hindostan, which he describes as the biggest disaster of his career. The 2018 film, made on a massive budget of Rs 300 crore, was expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters, with an ensemble cast including Aamir, Amitabh Bachchan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and a special appearance by Katrina Kaif. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Yash Raj Films, the movie was eagerly anticipated but turned out to be a colossal failure, despite a massive opening.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio, Aamir discussed what went wrong with the film. When asked if there was a burden on him as audiences often expect a social message in his films, even in an entertainer like Thugs of Hindostan, Aamir disagreed, stating, “No, Thugs is not a case of that. Thugs was just a film that…I believe was not a very good film. So it did not work because I didn’t talk about social issues. I think people saw the trailer, and it was well-received by the audience. It got a huge opening.”

The interviewer mentioned enjoying the film, to which Aamir laughed and responded, “Well I’m not happy with how Thugs turned out myself. So, it’s not a burden on me. I go with my instinct as always. If I like something, I go with it. A film like Delhi Belly or Dhoom 3 or Ghajini, doesn’t have a social commentary or social issue, but they’re entertaining, better-made films.”

Released on Diwali 2018, Thugs of Hindostan earned Rs 52 crore on its opening day but saw a sharp decline in earnings, ultimately grossing only Rs 327 crore worldwide.
