South African footballer Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, only days after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches in the tournament, starting the opening two games against Mexico and Czechia before making a substitute appearance in the win over South Korea. He did not feature in Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, paid tribute to the midfielder, describing his death as a huge loss for the country’s football community.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
No official cause of death has been announced. McKenzie asked for restraint on speculation around the matter.
Police confirmed that an investigation is underway after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Cape Town on Saturday morning.
Adams rose through Stellenbosch FC’s academy to become the club’s first homegrown player to sign a professional contract in 2020. After 139 appearances and the 2023 Carling Knockout title, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns, where he won the Premiership and CAF Champions League. Internationally, he helped South Africa secure AFCON 2024 bronze and featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A day before the 1-1 draw against Czechia, Adams’ grandmother Marianna had passed away.
“When I reached out to Jayden to offer my condolences and encouragement, I shall carry forever the humble, appreciative response he gave me. That he chose to wear the national jersey and give his all for his country in that moment speaks to a depth of character and professionalism well beyond his years, and it reflects the calibre of young man South Africa has lost,” McKenzie added.
The South African Football Players Union also expressed its condolences.
“His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large,” a statement from the union said.
