Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat, is a rapidly growing urban center located on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Situated adjacent to Ahmedabad, the former capital and a major metropolitan hub this region is expanding exponentially in terms of infrastructure and urban development. This growth is steadily transforming vast stretches of land, with agricultural fields being converted into industrial zones and residential layouts. While development is concentrated in the urban core, the surrounding rural landscapes are often overlooked. Gandhinagar is traditionally surrounded by agricultural fields and numerous small lakes and ponds that support local livelihoods, but these ecosystems are increasingly under pressure.
Gandhinagar Pond (Survey No. 2528), located to the north of the main city, is one such neglected water body. Years of poor maintenance led to the unchecked growth of invasive weeds, encroachments that compromised its boundaries, and erosion that weakened its embankments. Excess silt deposition further reduced its storage capacity and affected groundwater percolation. This was the degraded state of a once-significant water body that supports surrounding farmlands and local water needs.
Under the #BlueGreenGujarat initiative, the Environmentalist Foundation of India (E.F.I.), in collaboration with DXC Technology as the funding partner and the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation as the administrative partner, has taken up the restoration of this water body.
