Is May 1 a public holiday in India?
Yes, it’s a public holiday in many parts of India to observe Labour Day on May 1. It is primarily a state-declared public holiday, which means whether you get the day off depends on where you live and work.
States such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, West Bengal, Kerala, and Assam commonly observe Labour Day as an official holiday. In these regions, many government offices, banks, schools, and some private institutions may remain closed. However, in the other states, regular operations may continue.
Are banks open on labour day?
Under the Reserve Bank of India’s regional holiday calendar, banks are closed in states where May 1 is listed as a holiday. If you are planning branch visits, cheque clearances, or in-person banking work, it’s wise to check your local bank holiday list in advance.

Labour Day 2026: Stock market holiday on May 1?
Stock market investors should note that trading will remain suspended on Friday, May 1. Both the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed in commemoration of Maharashtra Day and not Labour Day. All stock market segments, including Equity, Equity Derivatives, Currency market activity, and Commodity Derivatives, will be non-operational.
Services that will remain openShops, Malls, and Restaurants: Most malls, restaurants, cinemas, supermarkets, and local shops usually remain open, especially in metro cities and commercial hubs. Smaller businesses or local markets could, however, operate on reduced hours depending on the state.
Public transportation: Public transport services, including buses, trains, metros, taxis, and app-based cabs, continue to run like normal. However, there may be minor schedule changes in certain cities due to local events or rallies.
Essential services: Emergency services like hospitals and pharmacies will remain open as usual.
