About the Organisation

Pathar Gadhai Mazdoor Suraksha Sangh (PGMSS) is a registered trade union of over 6,000 Dalit and Adivasi stone-carving artisans/workers based in Pindwara (Sirohi district, Rajasthan), which is the hub of India’s international temple construction industry. Workers in this sector face grave occupational hazards, especially the incurable and deadly disease of Silicosis as well as wage exploitation.

About the Role

PGMSS is looking to hire a Legal Associate to join its technical support team. The role involves:

• Coordinate with our panel of lawyers, workers and union staff to ensure timely progress of our portfolio of nearly 100 cases under various labour laws;
• Prepare for hearings (including preparing workers, documents and any other support as required);
• Manage and track all the moving parts of the union’s overall legal portfolio;
• Systematize and manage union’s archives of legal records, documents and files;
• Providing legal counselling and mediation services to aggrieved workers;
• Providing legal information and training to workers and their families,
• Assisting with legal drafting; and
• Strengthening and supporting the Union’s overall work, as required.

We are looking for someone with more than just technical legal skills. As this is a union-led struggle rooted in workers’ lived realities, we are looking for someone who brings commitment, integrity, strong professional ethics, organisational skills, along with the spirit to work closely with people and communities.

The role offers a rare opportunity to develop a grounded understanding of the intersections of society, political economy, and law through direct engagement with workers’ struggles. At the same time, the candidate will have the experience of living and working in a uniquely beautiful southern Rajasthan.

Eligibility

• The candidate must hold a law degree and preferably have cleared the All India Bar Exam.
• The candidate must be proficient in Hindi and capable of drafting legal documents in Hindi. Working level proficiency in English as well is preferred.
• The candidate must be willing to be based full-time in Pindwara, Sirohi district.
• The candidate should preferably have at least one year of experience working with a law office or in the capacity of a para legal.
• The candidate must be willing and comfortable with working closely with union members and informal-sector workers.
• The candidate should have the aptitude to incorporate workers’ knowledge and lived experiences into legal drafting and strategy.

Location & Duration

Preference will be given to candidates who are resident of Rajasthan, particularly from Udaipur, Sirohi or Pali districts. This role is for a 1-year renewable contract, preferably starting 1st May 2026. Candidate will be on a 3-month orientation and probation period. This is a long-term position and we are looking for a lawyer to join our movement as a member of our collective.
