About the Project
Project 39A is one of the most distinguished and impactful centres at the National Law University Delhi (NLUD). Over the years, it has earned national and international recognition for its contributions to access to justice, legal aid, criminal justice reform, and empirical legal research.
The University has recently reconstituted the leadership of Project 39A and is in the process of expanding its team to strengthen its work in research-driven policy, training and capacity-building, and institutional reform within the criminal justice system.
Litigation Cum Research – Associate
Role and Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal and empirical research in areas related to criminal justice and access to justice
- Undertake fieldwork for the purposes of research
- Collate, analyse and publish findings of research
- Assist in preparing reports, policy briefs, and academic outputs
- Contribute to litigation strategy and legal drafting where required
- Brief and assist senior advocates and advocates on record
- Support Project 39A’s engagement with courts, institutions, and stakeholders
- Contribute to developing, implementing and expanding Project 39A’s research projects and databases related to the death penalty
- Present the work of P39A at appropriate for a. Undertake administrative or any other work that may be necessary to further the aims of Project 39A
Eligibility
- Graduate with a degree in law.
- Familiarity with criminal law and the Indian criminal justice system is a strong requirement.
- Apart from English, proficiency in at least one Indian language is mandatory.
Desirable:
- Prior experience in litigation, legal research, or policy work
- Publications or writing in relevant areas.
Academic Fellow
Role and Responsibilities:
- Manage and coordinate research and policy projects under Project 39A
- Support the design and implementation of empirical and qualitative research
- Coordinate with researchers, institutions, and external stakeholders
- Engage with various central and state agencies involved in the administration of the Indian criminal justice system
- Contribute to publications, reports, and dissemination of research findings
- Organise events, workshops, and stakeholder engagements
- Undertake administrative or any other work that may be necessary to further the aims of Project 39A
Eligibility:
- LL.M. or a relevant Master’s degree with at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade)
- Strong academic record
- Prior experience in research, project coordination, or policy work
Desirable:
- Experience in fieldwork, data collection, and managing research projects
- Familiarity with criminal justice systems, legal aid, or access to justice issues

Salary
- The selected candidates will receive a monthly remuneration funded by Project 39A.
- The selected candidates will receive a consolidated remuneration of INR 50,000 (Rupees Fifty Thousand) per month (subject to TDS deduction @10% under the Income Tax Act).
- The appointment will be for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds under Project 39A.
