About the Programme
The programme is designed to provide comprehensive legal assistance, case review, and documentation support to undertrial prisoners at Sabarmati Central Jail, Ahmedabad. It focuses on the timely identification of eligible prisoners and facilitates the preparation, filing and effective follow-up of bail applications. In addition, the programme seeks to strengthen institutional coordination among GNLU, the District Legal Services Authority, prison authorities, defence counsel and probation officers to expedite bail proceedings. It also aims to conduct periodic, rights-based legal awareness sessions within the prison to enhance legal literacy and access to justice among inmates.
About the Opportunity
Applications are invited from eligible and interested candidates for project on “Enhancing Access to Justice for Undertrial Prisoners” as given below
Eligibility
(i) Project Manager
- A degree in Law (LL.B./LL.M.).
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in legal practice.
- Must be eligible to appear before the courts as on the date of application.
- Working knowledge of Gujarati language.
- Knowledge of Computer applications.
Desirable
Prior experience of working in a legal aid project focused on access to justice, prison reforms, women, children or other marginalized sections of the society
(II) Project Fellow (Legal)
- A degree in Law (LL.B./LL.M.).
- Minimum of 2 years’ post qualification experience in legal practice.
- Must be eligible to appear before the courts as on the date of application.
- Working knowledge of Gujarati language
- Knowledge of Computer applications
- Prior experience of working in a legal aid project focused on access to justice, prison
- reforms, women, children or other marginalized sections of the society.
(III) Project Fellow (Social work)
- Post Graduate Degree in Social Work or any allied discipline from a recognized Indian University.
- Minimum of 2 years’ post qualification experience of working with a governmental or non-governmental organization engaging with prison reforms, economically marginalized sections of society or similar aspects of social work.
- Working knowledge of Gujarati language.
- Knowledge of Computer applications.
Responsibilities
(i) Project Manager
Under the overall supervision of Project Director, the Project Manager shall be the primary liaison officer and responsible to execute the programme, Supervise, guide and monitor Legal Fellows and Social Work Fellows. Project Manager shall ensure overall smooth implementation of programme with timely reporting and financial due diligence.
(II) Project Fellow (Legal)
- Draft, file and argue the bail petitions and other applications before the competent courts along with the Gujarat High Court. Project Fellow (Legal) shall be offering legal advise along with necessary legal documentation work to facilitate the release of eligible undertrial prisoners on bail. Project Fellow (Legal) shall be responsible to maintain detailed case records and coordinate with the Project Fellow (Social work) under the supervision of Project Manager and overall supervision of Project Director.
- Project Fellow- Legal are allowed to continue their independent legal practice subject to primary responsibility within the project and with disclosure to the Project Director. In any case the precedent shall be for programme work.
(III) Project Fellow (Social work)
- Project Fellow (Social work) shall be responsible to undertake field visits, local travel as required, maintain detailed case files and report to the Project Coordinator and Project Director.
- Project Fellow (Social work) shall provide comprehensive support in conducting need assessments at prisons for undertrial prisoners. The Project Fellow (Social work) shall Work in close coordination with the Project Fellow (Legal) to provide psycho-social support and other case related follow-up.
General Terms & Conditions
- Tenure: The initial appointment for the above-mentioned positions shall be for 11 months. The tenure may be extended based on satisfactory performance, needs and availability of funds.
- The staff will be purely for the implementation of programme and in any manner will not be the employee of the Gujarat National Law University or the Azim Premzi foundation for any purpose.
- Travel: No Travel Allowance (T.A.) or Daily Allowance (D.A.) will be paid for attending the interview.
- Project Director retains the discretion to amend/modify/relax the criteria as mentioned above or revise the terms of appointment as may be required for effective implementation of the programme.
