Craftsmen to Benefit from Viswakarma Kausal Samman Yojna

The Indian government is actively searching for ways to ensure that all citizens have access to basic necessities. In addition to this, the Modi government has recognized the importance of honoring deserving individuals as a means of uplifting and boosting morale. Viswakarma Kausal Samman Yojna is an initiative aimed at empowering those who are both skilled and 

economically disadvantaged.

On Independence Day this year, Prime Minister Modi announced the launch of Viswakarma Yojna on the auspicious occasion of Viswakarma Jayanti. The scheme aims to support skilled labor and traditional craftsmanship, particularly among the OBC community. Its objective is to empower and honor those who work in the background and often go unnoticed, such as blacksmiths, goldsmiths, weavers, and other traditional craftsmen.

An initial fund of Rs 13,000 – 15,000 crores has been allocated for the scheme. Adding on to this, the PM also said that the poverty line of the nation has been alleviated and that 13.5 crore people below the poverty line “have broken free from the chains of poverty and entered the new middle class”. He also stated, how various government schemes have benefitted these 13.5 crore poor countrymen and women and have managed to rise above the hardships of poverty.

Artisans and craftspeople will be provided a loan of up to Rs 1 lakh in phase 1 and 2 lakh in phase 2 at an interest of 5% at a repayment time of 18 and 30 months vice versa. Skill training along with a stipend of Rs 500 per day will also be given during the training period. An initial amount of Rs 15,000 will be provided to purchase the toolkit, along with an identity card and certificates.

Artisans’ eligibility is only the, he/she should be an Indian national and should be 18 years of age. Should be an artisan or craftsperson and should not have availed of PMEGP, PM SVANidhi, or Mudra loan. Craftspeople engage in trades like fishing, tailoring, laundry, barber, garland makers, doll and toy makers, basket/mat coir weavers, broom makers, masons, cobblers, sculptors, potters, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, locksmiths, shoesmiths, boat makers, armorers, carpenters are some of the eligible traders.

The eligible craftspeople meeting the criteria can avail the benefit as it will be officially functional on September 17, 2023. This scheme is expected to have a significant positive impact on over 164 backward classes, benefiting approximately 30 lakh families.
