In Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) has redefined the museum experience by transforming a former 2012 Olympic broadcasting center into the V&A East Storehouse. Moving away from traditional museum hierarchies where storage is hidden “backstage,” the architects “flipped the diagram.” They filled the massive internal volume with a dense, efficient shelving system and then carved a public “inner sanctum” directly through the center.
This “collection cloud” puts approximately 250,000 objects and 350,000 books on display in their stored state, ranging from a 1920s Frankfurt Kitchen to a section of the Robin Hood Gardens social housing estate. The design uses a utilitarian steel shelving system as its primary architectural language, allowing visitors to share the “same oxygen” as the artifacts.
