The Supreme Court of India on Monday witnessed a sharp exchange between Chief Justice Surya Kant and Advocate Mathews Nedumpara during the mentioning of a matter related to judicial appointments.
The advocate sought to raise a plea calling for reconsideration of the collegium system and revival of the National Judicial Appointments Commission. However, the Chief Justice pointed out that no such petition was officially listed or registered before the Court. When Nedumpara went on to make remarks suggesting preferential listing of cases involving prominent corporate groups while issues concerning ordinary citizens were overlooked, the Bench strongly objected.
Expressing displeasure, the Chief Justice cautioned the advocate against making unfounded allegations or displaying disrespect in court. He reminded Nedumpara of prior instances where his conduct had been questioned and made it clear that such behaviour would not be tolerated. The CJI underscored that courtroom proceedings demand discipline and restraint, and warned that appropriate steps could be taken if decorum was breached.
The episode highlights the Court’s firm stance on maintaining professional standards during hearings, particularly when constitutional issues such as judicial appointments are involved.
