Name of the Organisation
Women’s Lawyers Association, under Advocate Gayathri, Madras High Court.
Duration of Internship
June 2023
How did you apply?
Based on my professor’s reference.
First-Day Formalities, Infrastructure, and First Impression
Entered the Women Lawyers’ Association at Madras High Court by 9:30 a.m., I saw advocates busy with their clients and court hearings.
My senior advocate gifted me a kit box, and she told me that I should carry it every day. On the first day, she did not assign me any work, but she told me to look around the court campus and the court hall.
Main Tasks
- Being on time for court
- Carrying the kit box without fail
- Reading judgments and having to explain them to her, since she kept asking me questions
- Drafted petitions and legal notices
- Learned online filing of cases and court documents in the court’s online portal
- Marking upcoming hearing dates
- Maintaining the court diary
Work Environment
- Always busy and professional
- Seniors become very strict when it comes to work (they won’t compromise on work quality)
- Friendly colleagues and supportive seniors (not only my office advocates, but the advocates in court also taught me many things when I had doubts)
Good Things about the Internship
- Learned out of books into real life (practical work)
- Supportive senior, and I got many contacts, more like family
- How an advocate should carry themselves in real life
Bad Things about the Internship
- The real struggle in this field, especially when it comes to women lawyers
- Stereotype that interns should be bound to seniors (I think having respect and being obedient to seniors is more important than having fear of them)
- Understanding court terms like “call for,” “sitting,” etc.
- Sometimes, I got pressure due to multitasking
- Obviously, we go for an internship to gain knowledge, but if they give a fair stipend, like 100 rupees a day, others might say, “Why are you giving that? It’s just an internship.”
Monthly Stipend
My senior used to give me 100 rupees every day.
Details about the Accommodation, Commuting to the Office
- I used to travel one hour by bus to reach the High Court
- I learned to be on time, punctual, and disciplined
Anything else you want to share?
- Met amazing people and learned to survive in a negative atmosphere too
- Developed discipline, time management, and patience
