From the absence of proper infrastructure to basic aid, India has to do all it can to groom the next generation of sporting stars from our villages and small towns.

Shrikant Madhabv Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), recently spoke to Sportstar about issues related to sports. According to Vaidya, there is an immediate requirement to improve sports infrastructure in the villages if India were to produce stars.

Among many initiatives taken by IOCL, ‘Parivartan’ is the latest. The Parivartan initiative will provide sports coaching to prison inmates. In a press release published on Indian Oil, Vaidya mentions: “IndianOil has been leading a number of social stewardship programmes across the country. ‘Parivartan’ initiative aims to build confidence and improve the well-being of prison inmates through sports”.

“The programme is in sync with IndianOil’s core value of care and will complement our ongoing initiative of employing prison inmates and people who have completed their time in prison, as customer attendants at our fuel stations,” he further added.

While it is true that India has produced some of the greatest athletes, such as P.T. Usha, Milkha Singh, and Mary Kom, the nation needs to improve the sports infrastructure to keep producing such gems. The following are the areas of development for sports infrastructure in rural India and small towns.

Basic aid: If India is to produce star athletes it has to work on its infrastructure. We are a country with the second largest population in the world, yet we are far behind in sports when compared to countries with smaller populations. According to a report, India only spent ₹ 17 billion on sports-related activities in 2022. India has to spend much more on basic aid if the standard of sports were to be increased.

We will explore more on what India must do to take care of its athletes from rural areas in our next episode.
