The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is likely to temporarily close Amma canteens in several areas in the city owing to renovation work.

The civic body is planning to close at least 15 Amma canteens temporarily for at least two weeks. It has commented to give 349 Amma canteens a makeover. Beneficiaries will be directed to the nearest Amma canteens.

Following the completion of the first phase of renovation work in two weeks, the GCC will commence the next phase of work in other areas. “We will ensure that all beneficiaries will get food in the Amma canteens during the renovation period,” said an official.

During the tenure of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the civic body had launched 407 Amma canteens in 15 zones in Chennai. Currently, Amma canteens are providing food at 385 locations in the city. As many as 349 Amma canteens have kitchens, while 36 canteens are functioning without kitchens by supplying food prepared in other canteens.

From 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., the canteens sell Idli at a subsidised rate of ₹1 and Pongal. From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., the canteens sell sambar rice, curd rice, lemon rice, and curry leaf rice. Chapati is sold from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The number of beneficiaries ranges from one lakh to 1.5 lakh every day, with the total touching ₹4 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh. The number of beneficiaries is expected to increase following the renovation work.
