The body of a cab driver who fell into the sea with his vehicle at Chennai port on Tuesday (December 17, 2024) has been retrieved.

I. Mohammed Shaji, 33, of Kodungaiyur, drove a cab operated by a private firm, which was being used to ferry Coast Guard staff in Jawahar Dock at Chennai Port Trust. On Tuesday night, when he was driving the cab with Coast Guard officer Jogendra Kanda in the backseat, the vehicle skidded and fell into the sea.

The police said both Shaji and Kanda were drowning, but the latter managed to open the rear window of the cab and escape. He was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment.

On Wednesday (December 18, 2024), the Fire and Rescue Services and Coast Guard personnel intensified their search to retrieve the body of the driver and the cab. Though they pulled out the cab from the sea, the driver’s body was not in it.

Late Wednesday night, the body was found a few meters from the accident spot. It was retrieved and sent to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for postmortem examination.

The Harbour Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
