Bengaluru: In a move to boost its revenue, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) plans to utilise available spaces for commercial development at Metro stations along its upcoming 36-km Hebbal-Sarjapur corridor.
With 28 stations planned on the corridor, BMRCL has identified 10 stations for potential commercial ventures, officials said. The stations include Dairy Circle, Bus Station Circle, and Bakery Circle. “These stations will be developed through private enterprises, with designated spaces of approximately 50,000 square metres set aside at each station for commercial use,” a BMRCL spokesperson stated.
There will be parking spaces, retail shops, and other facilities aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and generating additional revenue.
“We cannot totally depend on the fare box, which has to remain affordable for passengers. There need to be other sources of revenue to support the operations,” the spokesperson added.
“The govt has already approved the capacity for this project, and now we are awaiting Centre’s approval. Once we get it, we will call for private players for these establishments,” the official said.
Tenders have been called for establishing small shops at a few existing stations. In Sept this year, tenders were under evaluation for licensing rights of built-up space for commercial activities near Indiranagar Metro station.
