SC Bans Law Interns from Courtrooms on Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays

The Supreme Court of India has decided to restrict the entry of law interns into its courtrooms on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, which are designated as miscellaneous hearing days. The move comes in response to a request made by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) citing overcrowding and disruption during these high-traffic days.

In a communication dated July 30, 2025, issued by the Court’s Registry, it was stated:

“The competent authority has been pleased to accede to the request made by Supreme Court Bar Association for restricting access of law interns inside the courtrooms on miscellaneous hearing days, i.e., Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.”

Interns, however, will continue to be allowed within the court premises and corridors on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which are typically regular hearing days with less footfall.

Why the Restriction?

The SCBA had earlier written to the Court highlighting practical difficulties faced by senior advocates and regular practitioners due to the growing number of interns present during peak courtroom activity. The letter noted:

“It has been observed that on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, there is significant congestion in the courtrooms and court corridors. This is largely attributed to the high number of interns present on these days.”

The SCBA pointed out that some interns often occupied seats and did not vacate them even when requested by practicing members of the Bar, further inconveniencing the functioning of the legal fraternity.

What This Means

  • Interns will not be allowed inside courtrooms on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays
  • Access remains open on Wednesdays and Thursdays
  • The restriction aims to ease congestion and ensure smooth movement for senior lawyers and litigants

The move is likely to impact legal interns undergoing court exposure as part of their academic training, but also highlights the growing concern over space and efficiency within India’s apex judicial forum.
