Gujarat govt forms AI taskforce for tech-driven governance, growth

Gandhinagar: Within days of adopting a resolution for the strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) in governance, the state govt on Monday announced the constitution of an AI task force to oversee the deployment of AI for “technology-driven governance and socio-economic development”.
The task force, chaired by the principal secretary of the science and technology department, will have 10 members, including directors from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), along with five experts from various fields, the govt said. “The deployment of artificial intelligence is essential to ensure citizens receive benefits of schemes and services effectively and swiftly, utilising technology to its fullest,” a govt statement said.
Recently, the state govt signed an MoU with Microsoft to establish an AI Centre of Excellence in GIFT City. This centre will utilise key technologies such as machine learning, cognitive services and bot services, organise pilot projects, roll out successful pilots, and conduct various training programmes. It will enhance technological advancement in fields like production, healthcare and education, providing extensive support to both govt and industry by delivering effective, timely services to citizens and promoting innovation at the grassroots level.
To operate for a year initially, the task force will undergo annual review to extend its scope of work and functioning and incorporate necessary improvements, the statement said.
Members of the task force will include officials from Directorate of ICT and e-Governance, the director of IIT Gandhinagar, the director of IIIT, senior experts from the India AI Mission and senior experts from National Informatics Centre (NIC), Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), NVIDIA and Indian Software Products Industry Round Table (ISPIRT).
