Filmmaker Atlee is gearing up for the release of his latest production venture, ‘Baby John’, starring Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi. The film is an official adaptation of Atleeās 2016 Tamil film ‘Theri’, starring Thalapathy Vijay.
In a recent conversation with Kapil Sharma on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Atlee had a sharp reply to the hostās twisted question about his physical appearance. Actors Varun, Keerthy, and Wamiqa were also present with Atlee during the show, and the particular question Kapil asked the filmmaker has now sparked a social media frenzy, with some finding it tinged with racism.

What are your thoughts on Atlee’s bold reply to Kapil Sharma’s twisted question?
In the clip, Kapil asked Atlee whether the leading stars used to be confused when seeing him in person, even though he is a prominent filmmaker and producer. Atlee, with respect, answered the question, āIn a way, I understood your question, Iāll try to answer it. I am very thankful to AR Murugadoss because he produced my first film. He didnāt see how I looked, whether I was capable or not, but he loved my narration. I think the world should see that. We shouldnāt judge by appearance; we should judge by the heart.ā His answer received a huge round of applause from the audience and netizens alike.

As soon as the video was shared on Reddit, many criticised Kapil for his remarks and supported Atlee for his sharp reply. One social media user wrote, āThat was so rudeā¦ He handled it perfectly. Because colourism is so normalised in South Asia, disrespecting someone for their skin colour is often seen as funny or deserved.ā Another reacted, āKudos to Atlee for giving it back and making it sound wrong from Kapilās end.ā
However, there were some who believed that Kapilās question was not intended to harm Atleeās appearance. āKapil clearly says āyou are so young but a big director already.ā It was directed at that, not his looks. He wasnāt talking about the manās body complexion; he was joking about how you donāt look like… a director stereotype… Only pseudo-liberals are making a thing out of nothing,ā another commented. āHe said nothing about colour or appearance.ā
‘Baby John’ will hit theatres on December 25, coinciding with Christmas.
