On August 12, 2024, the Ministry of Education announced the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024. It came as no surprise that the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad was ranked at the top in the management category. Since 2020, IIM Ahmedabad has held the top spot. Moreover, out of the nine editions of the NIRF, IIM Ahmedabad has been ranked first seven times. The other two times, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore claimed the top spot, in 2016 and 2019.
With the Indian Ranking 2025 Data Capturing System (DCS) window now live, the question arises: “Will IIM Ahmedabad retain its crown?” While we will have to wait for the NIRF 2025 results next year, let’s take a look at how this prestigious management institute has performed in previous editions.
The Ministry of Education ranks institutes based on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practices (RPC), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PER). IIM Ahmedabad demonstrates strong performance in Graduation Outcomes (98.71) and Teaching, Learning, and Resources (91.88), reflecting a focus on student achievement and quality education. Perception (96.81) supports its positive reputation. However, Research and Professional Practices (63.83) and Outreach and Inclusivity (71.72) indicate potential for growth in innovation and diversity.

In the management category of the NIRF Ranking 2023, IIM Ahmedabad secured the top spot with an overall score of 83.20.
IIM Ahmedabad excels in Graduation Outcomes (99.14) and Teaching, Learning, and Resources (92.55), highlighting its strong academic infrastructure and student success. Perception (96.14) shows a solid reputation. However, Research and Professional Practices (63.45) and Outreach and Inclusivity (69.66) indicate areas for improvement in innovation and diversity efforts.

Teaching, Learning, and Resources (92.76) indicate solid support for students. However, its Research and Professional Practices (63.22) and Outreach and Inclusivity (68.13) scores suggest room for growth in these areas.

The Teaching, Learning, and Resources score (91.41) highlights effective support for students. Research (65.09) and Outreach and Inclusivity (70.01) scores indicate areas for improvement, particularly in research and inclusivity efforts.

Its high Perception score (95.99) reflects a solid reputation. However, its Outreach and Inclusivity (66.78) and Research (63.06) scores suggest there is room for growth in these areas.

Will IIM Ahmedabad retain its top position in the NIRF 2025 Ranking?
Given IIM Ahmedabad’s consistent performance over the years, with seven out of nine top rankings in the NIRF Management category, it is highly likely that the institute will continue to hold its position in 2025. While challenges in Research and Outreach remain, IIM Ahmedabad’s exceptional scores in Graduation Outcomes, Perception, and Teaching, Learning, and Resources solidify its reputation as a leading management institute. Its strong academic infrastructure, alumni success, and institutional reputation suggest that IIM Ahmedabad is well-positioned to retain its top ranking, though it will need to maintain its focus on improving inclusivity and research practices for continued excellence.
