How did you apply?

I came to know about the internship opportunity through a personal reference and subsequently applied for the internship at the Law Chambers of Nitin Mehta.

Students interested in litigation and seeking practical exposure to court proceedings, legal research, drafting, and case preparation may approach the chamber for internship opportunities.

First-Day Formalities, Infrastructure, and First Impression

On the first day of my internship, I was instructed to report to the chamber situated at Chamber No. 105, Block 3, Delhi High Court, New Delhi.

As this was one of my first opportunities to closely observe the functioning of a litigation chamber, I was both excited and slightly nervous. Upon reaching the chamber, I was introduced to Mr. Nitin Mehta and the members of his team. I was asked about my academic background, areas of interest in law, and previous internship experience.

My first impression of the chamber was very positive. The working environment was professional yet comfortable, and the associates were approachable and helpful. I was briefed about the nature of work handled by the chamber and the tasks that I would be expected to perform during the internship.

Being situated within the Delhi High Court premises was itself an exciting experience. The atmosphere of the court, interactions among advocates, and regular exposure to active court proceedings made the internship feel practical and engaging from the very first day.

Main Tasks

My primary tasks during the internship included reading case files, understanding the factual background of matters, conducting legal research, finding relevant judgments, preparing case briefs, and assisting with drafting and case preparation.

Before attending court proceedings, I was encouraged to read the relevant case files so that I could understand the facts and legal issues involved in the matter. This practice made court visits much more meaningful because I was able to understand the arguments being advanced and relate them to the facts and documents I had studied beforehand.

I was also assigned research work on different legal propositions arising out of ongoing matters. This involved researching statutory provisions and relevant judgments and preparing concise research notes. The assignments helped me understand the practical importance of legal research in litigation.

Court visits were an important part of the internship. Depending upon the matters listed on a particular day, I accompanied Sir or the associates to different courts. I had the opportunity to observe proceedings before the Delhi High Court as well as various District Courts in Delhi.

Observing matters before the Delhi High Court was particularly valuable. I was able to witness court appearances, arguments, interactions between the Bench and counsel, and the manner in which advocates present their cases before the Court.

The internship gave me exposure not only to courtroom proceedings but also to the preparation that takes place before a matter is argued. I learned that effective litigation requires detailed preparation, careful reading of case files, knowledge of the applicable law, and the ability to present the relevant facts and legal issues clearly.

Work Environment

The work environment at the Law Chambers of Nitin Mehta was professional, supportive, and conducive to learning. Mr. Nitin Mehta was approachable and encouraged interns to understand the practical aspects of litigation.

Whenever possible, legal issues arising from ongoing matters were discussed, which helped me understand how legal principles studied in law school are applied to actual cases. The associates were also supportive and guided me in understanding case files, conducting research, and observing court proceedings.

I felt comfortable asking questions and seeking clarification whenever I had difficulty understanding a legal issue or procedural aspect. The overall atmosphere of the chamber provided a good balance between professional discipline and interaction.

The internship gave me an opportunity to observe the everyday functioning of a litigation practice and understand the responsibilities involved in handling court matters.

Good Things about the Internship

The best part of the internship was the practical exposure to litigation and regular court visits.

Instead of limiting the internship experience to research assignments, I had the opportunity to read actual case files, understand ongoing matters, and subsequently observe the proceedings in court. This helped me connect theoretical legal knowledge with practical court proceedings.

Another valuable aspect of the internship was the guidance provided by Mr. Nitin Mehta. His approach towards litigation and emphasis on proper preparation, understanding the facts of a case, and conducting relevant legal research contributed significantly to my learning experience.

The opportunity to visit different courts also helped me understand that the functioning and nature of proceedings may vary depending upon the court and the nature of the matter.

Overall, the internship was an enriching experience for me and helped strengthen my interest in litigation.

Bad Things about the Internship

There were no significant negative aspects of my internship experience. However, litigation practice can involve a demanding schedule, particularly on days when matters are listed before different courts.

Interns should be prepared for travelling between courts and should be punctual and willing to adapt to the court schedule. For me, this was also an important part of understanding the practical realities of litigation.

Since the chamber is located within the Delhi High Court premises, commuting was convenient through public transport and the Delhi Metro. On days when matters were listed before other courts, I travelled directly to the concerned court as instructed.

The daily schedule depended upon the matters listed for hearing. Therefore, interns are advised to confirm the court and reporting time in advance and plan their travel accordingly.

My internship at the Law Chambers of Nitin Mehta was a valuable learning experience and gave me meaningful exposure to the practical side of the legal profession.

The combination of court visits, case-file reading, legal research, and interaction with Sir and the associates helped me understand litigation beyond classroom learning.

I am grateful for the guidance and opportunities provided to me during the internship. The experience helped me improve my legal research skills, understand court procedure, and develop a better appreciation of the preparation and responsibility involved in litigation practice.
