India make encouraging start on Day 1
India enjoyed a memorable opening day in lawn bowls as Putul Sonowal pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the competition by defeating reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in the men’s singles.
Making his Commonwealth Games debut, Sonowal claimed the opening set 5-4 before Bester levelled the contest by winning the second set 7-3. The Indian held his nerve in the tie-break to seal a famous victory and open his campaign in style. He will next face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands on Friday.
India also celebrated success in the women’s pairs event, where Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh edged past Malta in another tie-break.
The Indian duo dominated the opening set 7-1 before overcoming a spirited comeback to secure victory and give India a winning start in the competition.
With multiple medal events on the schedule and several of the country’s leading athletes set to compete, India will be aiming to convert its encouraging start into podium finishes on Day 2 of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
