Surat: A shocking incident of voyeurism during the ongoing marriage season has come to light in the city, where a 25-year-old man was arrested for secretly filming women using washrooms at party plots and farmhouses hosting wedding receptions.
The Utran police caught the accused, Purvil Sabhaya, on Tuesday and found 50-60 videos of women using the washrooms on his mobile phone.
Sabhaya, who is suspected of having a penchant for voyeuristic behaviour, allegedly entered various party plots across the city uninvited. He would enter the women’s washroom, hide in a convenient place, and discreetly record them on his mobile phone.
Police are investigating whether he intended to circulate the videos on social media or was acting purely out of some obsessive behaviour.
The case came to light late on Monday night when a staffer from the housekeeping agency entered the women’s washroom to clean it as it was vacant. Just as he was opening the door, a man suddenly emerged from inside.
“When questioned about his presence there, the man got furious, hurled casteist slurs, and slapped and kicked the cleaner. Hearing the commotion, other staff of the agency reached there and confronted the man. They snatched his mobile and found some videos of women entering the washroom and relieving themselves. They alerted the host, who called the police,” said Mini Joseph, assistant commissioner of police, in charge of the SC/ST cell.
Around 1am on Tuesday, the Utran police arrested the man, who was identified as Purvil Sabhaya, a resident of Mota Varachha.
“We found 50-60 videos of women using washrooms on his phone. He entered wedding and reception venues in Abrama, Sarthana, Varachha, Amroli, and other areas. We will send his phone to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further examination,” said a police official.
He was booked under BNS sections 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult to provoke a breach of peace), sections of the Prevention of Atrocities Act, and the Information Technology Act on the complaint lodged by the cleaner. Other relevant sections of BNS will be added once we get more details from the forensic report and his questioning.
Sabhaya, who earns a living by repairing water purifiers, got married a year and a half ago.
