Patna: An estimated 20 people per million population suffer from spinal cord injury (SCI) and approximately 20,000 new cases are added every year in the country. And most of the cases are related to wrong handling and transfer of accident victims from the spot to the ambulance or health facilities.

The statistics were shared during the inauguration of a five-day training programme at the NELS Skill Centre on the IGIMS premises by director in charge, Dr V M Dayal, on Monday. Doctors stressed the need to know about manual inline stabilisation (MILS) to handle any emergency situation in accident cases, said Dr Sanjeev Kumar, head of critical care medicine-cum-nodal officer of NELS (National Emergency Life Support) centre at the IGIMS.

Dr Sanjeev said thousands of accident victims get paralysed due to wrong handling and their transfer to hospitals or even ambulances to rush them to health facilities. “In case of injury, if the victim is not lifted and transferred to hospitals properly, he or she may suffer lifelong disability due to spine injury,” he told this newspaper.

He said road traffic accidents are a leading cause of the SCI. Other causes of SCI are falls, including from heights, or fall of heavy objects or sports-related injuries. “A large proportion of the SCI are young and active people and males in their productive 30s,” he said.

IGIMS superintendent, Dr Manish Mandal, said such training programmes are organised at the NELS, IGIMS under the guidance of the GoI.

Dr Om Kumar, dean (academic), said the NELS has been organising such awareness events for several years.
