2-Day Workshop on Fashion Law by MKD Centre of Excellence, NUALS Kochi [March 12-13, 2026; Offline]

About NUALS

The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), established by Act 27 of 2005 of the Kerala State Legislature, is a National Law University in Kochi, India, for undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate legal education. NUALS strives to advance and disseminate knowledge of the law and judicial processes, and to encourage research activities through dedicated Centres of Research.

About MKD Centre of Excellence

The Senior Advocate M. K. Damodaran International Centre of Excellence in Law is an initiative of The National University of Advanced Legal Studies to strengthen advanced legal education, research, and professional training in India. Conceived as a dedicated campus, the Centre aims to promote global standards in legal learning and practice through training programmes, interdisciplinary research, international collaborations, legal-aid initiatives, policy support, and ICT-enabled learning. It is envisioned as a hub for developing skills, fostering legal awareness, supporting law reform, and building capacity among lawyers, judges, policymakers, teachers, and students to enhance the role of law in social transformation and national development.

About the Workshop

The fashion industry constitutes one of the largest economic sectors globally, contributing significantly to gross domestic product while simultaneously navigating increasingly complex legal and regulatory challenges. In India, the fashion and textile sector employs over 45 million individuals and contributes approximately 13 per cent to manufacturing production, thereby serving as a vital pillar of the national economy. Despite its economic importance, the legal dimensions of the fashion industry remain comparatively underexplored within Indian legal education and professional discourse. The rapid expansion of India’s fashion ecosystem, coupled with digitalisation, sustainability mandates, evolving consumer protection standards, and global supply chain complexities, has created a pressing need for specialised legal expertise. The workshop seeks to bridge this academic and professional gap by providing structured exposure to the legal and regulatory framework governing the fashion industry through expert lectures, case-based discussions, interactive sessions, and a structured assessment, with certificates to be awarded based on performance in the final assessment conducted at the conclusion of the programme.

Modules of the Workshop

MODULE 1 – IPR AND FASHION LAW

Covers copyright protection for designs, trademark strategies for brand identity, patenting innovations, and enforcement against counterfeiting; includes analysis of landmark cases.

MODULE 2 – RELEVANCE OF COMPETITION LAW IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY

Examines anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance, merger controls, and resale price maintenance; features case studies on luxury brand cartels and market entry barriers.

MODULE 3 – ETHICS, COMPLIANCE, AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY

Explores ESG compliance, supply chain due diligence, anti-corruption policies, sustainability reporting, and human rights compliance.

MODULE 4 – CROSS-BORDER DIMENSIONS OF FASHION LAW
