Surat: In an alarming revelation, the Surat police found that the mysterious amputation of a 32-year-old man’s fingers was a self-inflicted act, reportedly stemming from frustration of workplace pressure and his inability to quit the job due to family obligations.
On Dec 8, 32-year-old a computer operator in a jewellery store, left the Amroli cops puzzled when he claimed some unidentified assailant severed four fingers of his left hand after he fell unconscious while urinating near Vedant Circle. However, his description left the police puzzled as no evidence supported the alleged attack—his valuables, including his motorcycle, mobile phone, and cash, were untouched, and the severed fingers were nowhere to be found.
The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) was roped in to crack the case, and the man broke down as cops countered him with the details of his movements and phone call records of Dec 8. He admitted that he chopped off his fingers due to immense work pressure and his inability to quit the job, which he felt forced to continue because the employer was a relative of his father.
A BE (civil) degree holder, he also took the police to the puddle where he disposed of the fingers and knife, which were eventually recovered.
“In the first attempt, he managed to chop off three fingers, and he struck again to sever the fourth,” said the officer. Police said he tied a cloth around his hand, which prevented blood stains from being left where he chopped his fingers.
To chop his fingers, he purchased a stainless steel butcher knife from a shop near Singanpore Cross Road. The shop owner confirmed ‘s identity, informing that he purchased the knife sometime around Dec 5.
” He did not want to continue working at the shop, but he could not leave the job since the employer was his father’s friend. As pressure mounted on him to continue with the job, he planned to chop off his fingers to escape the situation,” confirmed a police officer.
Talking to the media, the man said, “I was under immense stress due to work pressure and didn’t want to continue at the job. I resorted to this extreme step to escape the situation.”
He earns around Rs 50,000 a month, is married and the father of a two-year-old daughter. His father is a farmer living in their native village of Wadhvan in Surendranagar district.
However, police said they won’t initiate any legal action against him.
