With radicalism gaining momentum in South Asia and the Gulf, enhancing security and defense ties will have a positive impact on the bilateral relations between India and UAE.

India’s push for enhancing ties with Gulf nations will have positive impacts in the future. PM Modi’s priority to improve ties with the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia and UAE, will not only strengthen bilateral engagements but will allow countries to put a stop to the fundamentalist groups whose only interest is to spread their ideologies in the region.

The bilateral-level defense cooperation with Gulf countries began sometime during the last decade. The initial focus was maritime security in the Western Indian Ocean region. However, with the Modi government coming into the picture things rapidly progressed. Defense cooperation between India and UAE has furthered the bilateral relations between both countries.

For India, UAE, and Saudi Arabia are key partners in controlling security threats from extremist groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIS. India has also assisted the UAE by providing the latest defense systems to strengthen the country from external threats. In addition to assisting the UAE in the defense area, the two countries have been involved in military drills.

An article on Hindustan Times mentions the following:

“The UAE Navy has confirmed to its Indian and French counterparts that it will, for the first time, join the Varuna naval exercises to be held around the Gulf of Oman as the third partner between April 25 and 27. The French Navy is bringing the Charles de Gaulle carrier strike force while India will bring its heavy-duty guided missile destroyers for the advanced naval exercise. Next on the agenda are air exercises between the three air forces with Mirage 2000 fighters being the common thread and IAF looking to get Airbus 330 MRTT on lease from France.”

Another article published on the Financial Express website mentions the following:

“…Bilateral Defence interaction between India and UAE has been steadily progressing over the years. There have been regular high level exchanges at the level of Service Chiefs between the countries. The ships of both the Navies jointly undertake variousExercises such as Gulf Star 1, PASSEX, IDEX/NAVDEX regularly. In the recent past there has been serious impetus from UAE into the Indian A&D sector. Delegations led by Ministers and Senior military leaders have been attending Indian DefExpo and Aero India every alternate year. Recently, UAE military and Indian Ordnance factory have signed an agreement for supply of ammunition.”
